Improving the setup experience, step-by-step

Setting up a Premium Theme is never an easy task. Obox themes can be difficult but we know we are not alone in this.

Having installed and setup themes many times in my life I can say without a doubt that no one has really got it right yet.

I can run through a few issues with you but for me the primary issue is that settings are not centralized. Set your home page here, do your menu's there, add your logo over there and set your widgets here.

Having installed and setup themes many times in my life I can say without a doubt that no one has really got it right yet.

I can run through a few issues with you but for me the primary issue is that settings are not centralized. Set your home page here, do your menu’s there, add your logo over there and set your widgets here.

The result is that we all need to create documentation so users can read to help them setup their new theme. Each theme has slightly different settings and therefore each theme has slightly different documentation.

It’s a nightmare.

I reached a tipping point the other day when setting up an eCommerce theme and didn’t really know where to start. I was frustrated for 1000th time in my life and decided that Obox need to do something about it.

Since that fateful day we have come up with a motto which we are running with and won’t stop until we get to a happy place:

“The hardest part of installing an Obox theme must be uploading it to WordPress.”

We have a number of solutions which we are busy developing and testing but the first step is almost complete.

Since our theme home pages use widgets for flexibility we have decided that that is where we should focus our attention. The result is color coding our widgets.

Here’s a screenshot:

This way we can explain items in their simplest form. No longer do we have to come up with documentation to fix a fundamental problem in theme design. We can now say, “Put blue in the blue box.”

Peter has been working super hard on a good solution and so far the following themes are ready:

  • selecta
  • Casual
  • Handmade
  • Handmade eCommerce

We are on a mission to improve the experience and are going as far as user testing all our improvements. So if you have any feedback, ideas or requests then please drop us a line.
